METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY TAKES A COLLABORATIVE STEP FOR CLIMATE ACTION
At the climate policy workshop organised by Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, a shared roadmap was developed for the city's future in the areas of energy, transportation, water and waste management, as well as the protection of green spaces and cultural and natural assets.
The "Climate Policy Preparation Workshop", organised by the Metropolitan Municipality, was held at the Frigya Hall of Haller Youth Center with broad participation. During the workshop, important evaluations were made to enhance Eskişehir's capacity to combat and adapt to climate change.
Coordinated by the Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste, the workshop brought together universities, public institutions, professional chambers, non-governmental organisations, private sector representatives, municipal units, and the Climate Working Group. Through this multi-stakeholder structure, the aim was to develop comprehensive and actionable policy recommendations.
As part of the two-day workshop, focus group meetings were held under five main themes. During the "Energy Efficiency and Energy Management" session, the city's energy-related risks and opportunities were discussed, while the "Sustainable Transportation" session focused on low-carbon transportation systems, pedestrian priority, bicycle use, and micro-mobility solutions.
In the "Zero-Waste City and Waste Management" session, participants discussed the circular economy approach and waste management capacity, while the "Water Security" session addressed climate-resilient water management practices. The session titled "Protection of Green Spaces, Cultural and Natural Assets" highlighted nature-based solutions and the role of urban green infrastructure.
With broad participation ranging from municipal departments and the Climate Working Group -- a public-private cooperation initiative -- to universities, public institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector, the workshop focused on building a shared sense of direction rather than isolated solutions. The outcomes of the workshop are expected to guide Eskişehir's climate policies and contribute to preparing the city for a more resilient, sustainable, and liveable future.
