Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce released a message on the occasion of the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women - 25 November."
Mayor Ünlüce shared the following views in her message:
"25 November, the day when the Mirabal Sisters--who fought for their freedom--were brutally murdered in 1960, stands as a day of shame for humanity. On this day, which commemorates that tragic event and marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, women across the world unite as one voice and make their struggle for rights more visible.
However, it is deeply sorrowful that--even after 65 years--violence and murders against women continue to increase every 25 November. We all know that the only way to prevent violence is through an educational system that begins within the family and continues throughout life. No problem can be solved in our country without achieving gender equality. A free society is only possible with free women and free ideas. As a society, we must raise a stronger voice for women whose freedoms--and most tragically, their right to life--are taken away. Violence against women is a crime against humanity. Remaining silent means being complicit in the crime.
With this awareness, as the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, we value women and continue to stand by them. Through our Women's Counseling and Solidarity Center, we have provided free psychological, legal, health and educational support to more than 50,000 women to date. Through ESMEK, we meet women in both the city center and rural areas with courses and workshops. We offer various social supports, including scholarships to girls and accommodation in the guesthouse. With policies that empower women, we stand with them in their honorable struggle for employment and economic independence.
With these thoughts, I once again underline the need to strengthen solidarity for a bright future where women stand united and all forms of violence are completely removed from our lives. Together, we will build a future where women feel free, safe, equal and treated with justice.
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we stand firmly against violence, anger, discrimination, and any mindset that lacks love and respect!"
