Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce visited the Solid Waste Disposal and Energy Production Facility, which contributes significantly to the city's environmentally friendly and sustainable energy production, and inspected its operations firsthand. Emphasizing the importance of sustainable energy, Mayor Ünlüce said, "If we want to leave a more livable city for the future, we must use our resources more efficiently and utilize our waste in the best possible way. We must add value to nature, not burden it."
During the visit, Mayor Ünlüce was accompanied by Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General M. Recai Erdir, Deputy Secretary General Metin Bükülmez, Climate Change and Zero Waste Department Head Dr. Aytaç Ünverdi, Waste Management Branch Manager Merve Sayılır, and ITC Facility Manager Arif Aydın.
The facility collects approximately 900 tons of household waste daily from the surrounding area, which includes the city center. The waste is separated into organic, inorganic, and recyclable. Organic waste, in particular, is processed in digester tanks to produce biogas. The resulting biogas generates enough electricity to meet the energy needs of tens of thousands of households.
Residual waste generated after the energy production process is safely stored in sanitary landfills to prevent environmental damage. As the current Lot 1 site is completed, the Lot 2 facility, with a capacity of 2,919,000 cubic meters and a 12-year lifespan, will be commissioned soon.
The generated electricity, in accordance with regulations, is fed directly into the distribution company's power line, contributing to the city's energy infrastructure.
Mayor Ünlüce emphasized the importance of this facility, which both protects the environment and generates renewable energy, for Eskişehir. She said, "This beautiful city is the most important legacy we can leave to future generations. We must use our resources efficiently to leave a more livable city for the future. With this investment, we are recycling our waste while also creating a clean and sustainable energy source. This way, we are extending the lifespan of landfills and reducing carbon emissions. I want to emphasize once again that if we want to leave a more livable city for the future, we must make more efficient use of our resources and utilize our waste in the best possible way. We should add value to nature, not burden it. We are currently in the greenhouse within our facility. One of the most important aspects of this beautiful facility is that the heat generated by the engines is used here, in the greenhouses. As you can see, the colorful flowers produced in this greenhouse adorn the boulevards, streets, median strips, and the most beautiful areas of our city. With love, effort, care, and unity, Eskişehir."
