A Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment panel was organized hosted by the Metropolitan Municipality. One of the most important outcomes of the panel was the start of biodiversity inventory preparations in Eskişehir. The inventory study, which is based on inter-institutional cooperation, is of great importance in terms of protecting Eskişehirs natural resources and managing them sustainably.
A meaningful panel was held in Eskişehir within the scope of May 22 World Biodiversity Day and June 5 World Environment Day. The Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment panel, organized in collaboration with Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Climate Change and Zero Waste Department, Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Science Biology Department and Eskişehir Technical University Faculty of Science Biology Department, was held at the Haller Youth Center.
The panel, moderated by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Çabuk, one of the advisors of Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, included; Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Agriculture Dean Prof. Dr. Onur Koyuncu, Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Science Biology Department Head Prof. Dr. İsmühan Potoğlu Erkara, Eskişehir Technical University Faculty of Science Biology Department Head Prof. Dr. Mehmet Candan and Prof. Dr. Cengiz Türe from the same university participated as speakers.
Speaking at the opening, Prof. Dr. Çabuk emphasized the importance of addressing biodiversity and environmental problems with holistic approaches, and stated that inter-institutional cooperation will add value to studies in this field.
In the panel attended by Metropolitan Municipality employees, university students and representatives of civil society organizations, topics such as protecting biodiversity, local effects of climate change and developing environmental awareness were discussed. Speakers in the panel drew attention to Eskişehir's biodiversity potential and made striking assessments on the effects of climate change on agriculture, soil health, water management, environmental ethics and awareness of young people.
One of the most important outcomes of the panel was the announcement that the Eskişehir Biodiversity Inventory would be prepared. In this important study, retired academicians who are experts in biodiversity will also play an active role, along with Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, Eskişehir Osmangazi University and Eskişehir Technical University. This inventory study, which is based on cooperation between institutions, is of great importance in terms of protecting Eskişehirs natural resources and managing them sustainably.
At the end of the panel, it was emphasized that local governments, universities, industrial organizations and NGOs should cooperate more on climate change and biodiversity.
