MESSAGE FROM MAYOR AYŞE ÜNLÜCE FOR DECEMBER 3, INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce published a message on the occasion of December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Mayor Ünlüce remarked on the following views in her message:
“Life is a long journey in which each of us writes different stories. What makes this journey meaningful is our efforts to overcome all visible and invisible barriers. December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, reminds us all of the courage, hopes and successes of disabled individuals to overcome the difficulties they face as an inspiring lesson.
The most important indicator for a country to be considered democratic, modern and developed is the value it gives to its disabled citizens. What we call disability sometimes refers to an insensitive heart, sometimes to an understanding far from empathy. Disability is shaped by the physical, social or cultural barriers that individuals face in society. Therefore, the real barrier is the prejudices in people's minds.
The way to remove barriers is through love, empathy and solidarity. As the Metropolitan Municipality, we see this awareness as our priority in every project. Our greatest duty is to be with our disabled individuals with a more accessible city, more inclusive projects and a stronger social support network. In this context, the arrangements that ensure the integration of our disabled citizens with social life and the city are the basis of our understanding of social municipalism. Because we know the value of touching a person's life and filling a heart with hope.
As the Metropolitan Municipality, we continue to be with them every day, not just one day, with all our units, for the welfare and happiness of our disabled individuals and their families, so that they can be comfortable in urban life, be fully present in social life, and say 'I am here too' in business life with the aim of Eskişehir barrier-free.
On the occasion of December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I greet all our disabled citizens and their families with love and respect. Let us not forget that a person's potential is measured not by their disabilities, but by their dreams and efforts.
